Influenced by a mother who is a painter, a father who was a camera nerd and a brother who was never seen without a camera in his hand as an adult, creativity and cameras are familiar. In fact, they are familial. I often describe Photography as a tick, a hiding place, an obsession and an addiction for me. I have also described Photography as my tool for being a more appreciative witness to life's everyday moments and a conversation starter to connect with almost anybody. I've taken photos for the film & tv industry for 25 years as a location scout, and I've had the privilege to stand in some spaces that many people will never see in person, either because they aren't open to the general population or because they've been torn down to make way for the new. As a street & documentary photographer, I'm constantly taking photos of the moments I experience, i.e. the people, the details or the landscapes. I, too, rarely leave the house without a camera. Photography is not just my way of acknowledging these experiences, but also slowing down to appreciate them before they no longer exist exactly as they do in that singular instant. I am collecting them one frame at a time.
If I have a "style," it's candid, spontaneous, visual documentation. I use the existing light to grab that specific moment in front of me or that specific subject that's called out to me. My hope is that one of these images will speak something directly to you of the beauty and the impermanence of the world in which we wander. Maybe it will be a moment you'll want to collect for yourself.
In gratitude. --Kei
